Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane/Jean Ballantyne Grainger was born in 1855 in Andersons Bay, Dunedin – the daughter of Thomas Grainger, a farmer, and Margaret Murie.

She married Donald Duff Edwards, a labourer, on 28 June 1877 on the Otago Peninsula and they had three children.

When Jean signed the suffrage petition the family were living on the Otago Peninsula.

They celebrated their silver wedding anniversary in 1902 with a social at the Sandymount hall attended by about 200 guests.

Sometime after this they moved to live in St Kilda, Dunedin where Donald died in 1911.

Jean died on 9 August 1942, she is buried with Donald in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
