Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Wallace was born about 1847 in Ayrshire, Scotland.

She married William Elliott, an agricultural labourer, in 1870 in Kilmarnock and they had six children, three who died in childhood, before they emigrated to New Zealand in the mid-1880s.

They lived for a time in Mosgiel before they moved to Southland around 1889.

When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition they were living in Colac Bay.

In February 1893 William died as the result of an accident he sustained while walking home along a railway line – he is buried in the Riverton Cemetery.

Elizabeth went to live with her family in Eketahuna where she died on 28 June 1916 – she is buried in the Mangoaranga Eketahuna Cemetery.
