Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Catherine McLean McNaughton was born about 1842 in Rothesay, Buteshire, Scotland – the daughter of William McNaughton and Mary McLean.
She emigrated to New Zealand in the 1860s and she married Stephen Elllis, a farmer, in 1866.
They had five children and lived at Sandymount on the Otago Peninsula where Catherine signed the suffrage petition.
In 1903, due to Stephen’s health, they sold their stock and leased the farm before moving to South Dunedin.
'On Saturday evening Mr and Mrs Ellis were each presented with a handsome easy chair as tokens of esteem from friends and neighbours'.
Stephen died in 1905 and Catherine died on 4 August 1922 at her daughter’s home in South Dunedin, they are buried together in the Portobello Cemetery.
