Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jessie Turnbull Fleet/Flett was born in 1869 in New Zealand – the daughter of James Fleet, a labourer, and Elizabeth Turnbull.

Jessie spent her early years in Waitahuna before moving to Dunedin with her family in the 1880s.

When Jessie signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Walker Ave, off Stafford St, in Dunedin working as a tailoress.

Two of her sisters also signed the petition (See 54 A Fleet and 49 Bella Fleet)

Jessie married Benjamin William Sutherland Parsons, a boilermaker, in 1895 and they had six children.

Benjamin died in Dunedin in 1943, he is buried in the Fleet family grave in the Southern Cemetery.

Jessie died in Auckland on 13 December 1954, she is buried in the Purewa Cemetery, Auckland.
