Ruth Finch was born in 1860 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England, the daughter of Thomas Finch, an agricultural labourer, and Sarah Hind (or Hines).
Ruth arrived in Otago in 1863 with her family on the Matoaka.
She married Henry Robert Fleury, a tram driver, in 1880. They had ten children and three died in childhood.
Henry died in 1924 and Ruth died on 28 January 1949. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
