Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Lucy Jane Hazell was born about 1837 in East Ham, Essex, England – the daughter of James Hazell and Lucy Tullett.

Her mother died in the early 1840s and her father re-married.

Lucy married Charles Forsyth, a gardener, on 28 January 1860 in London.

They had three children before the family emigrated to Otago on the Crimea in 1863.

They lived at Inch Clutha for a short time before moving to Tokomairiro where their farm 'Arnha' was purchased.

They had a further eight children and were still at 'Arnha' when Lucy signed the suffrage petition.

Charles died at their home in 1899 and Lucy also died at home on 2 December 1906, they are buried together in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
