Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Georgina Dempster was born about 1848 in Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Dempster, a wool scourer, and Elizabeth Reid.

She arrived in Otago with her family in 1852 on the Stately and they settled in Green Island, near Dunedin.

Georgina married Frederick Freeman on 9 December 1880 in the Green Island Parish and they had four children.

When Georgina signed the suffrage petition at Enfield in North Otago the family were living in nearby Friston.

Frederick died in Oamaru in 1926 and Georgina died on 27 September 1937 at her daughter’s home in Oamaru – they are buried together in the Old Oamaru Cemetery.
