Ellen Martha Goldstone emigrated to New Zealand in 1873 with her parents, brothers, and sisters when she was just two years old. Her father, formerly a soldier, settled in Hawkes Bay where he was a storekeeper then a farmer. Her mother Ellen also signed the Petition, and both were registered to vote in 1893.
Ellen was probably still living with her parents in Frasertown when the Reverend George Enoch Kear arrived in Frasertown He was ordained in late 1908 and by 1910 was the curate at Dannevirke. He seemed to have gone to Sydney in 1911 but by the end of 1913, was back in New Zealand where he was inducted as Vicar of Frasertown. In an article he wrote for the Waipū Church Gazette describing a visit to the area by the Lord Bishop of the Diocese in August 1914, he expressed deepest gratitude to 'Mrs Goldstone for hospitizing His Lordship.'
Ellen Martha and George were married in 1914. Ellen was about eight years older than the Reverend George. They moved to Otaki and took up sheep farming. In 1928, George died suddenly aged fifty years. Ellen lived on until 1961 and was ninety when she died. They had no children, but Ellen mentioned many nieces and nephews in her will.
They were buried at Otaki, the site marked with a legible headstone.
