Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Jane Graham was born on 2 October 1871 in Bathgate, Linlithgowshire, Scotland – the daughter of Robert Graham, a farm labourer, and Agnes McLeish.

She emigrated with her family to Otago in 1876 on the Oamaru.

Her mother died the following year and her father later married Jane Lambeth, also a passenger on the Oamaru. (See 70 Jane Graham)

When Mary signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Brunswick St, South Dunedin.

Shortly after this she moved to Victoria, Australia. Mary married John William Gumley in Victoria in 1895 and they had six children, one who died in infancy.

Mary died on 13 April 1933 and John died in 1951, they are buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery.
