Janet Young Graham was born in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland around 1847. She was the eldest daughter of Joseph and Jane (nee Wishart) Young. She emigrated to Otago with her parents and siblings on the Storm Cloud, arriving in Dunedin on 30 July 1861.
Janet married Robert John Graham on 31 January 1862 at Portobello. They later moved to 7 McCrea St, Mornington, Dunedin where they lived for the rest of their lives. Their children included Catherine (born in 1863), Janet (1865), Margaret (1874), Agnes (1876) and Wilhelmina (1880). At least one of their daughters, Catherine, also signed the Petition.
Robert died in March 1886, and Janet died on 13 July 1929, aged 86. She is buried in Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
