Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Alice Gubbins was born in 1871 in Oxfordshire, England – the daughter of James Gubbins, a glover, and Fanny Buswell. (See 43 Fanny Gubbins)

She emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Scimitar with her family and they settled in Dunedin.

Her father died in 1881 and when Alice signed the suffrage petition she was living with her mother in Grosvenor St, Kensington working as a general servant.

She married Arthur Hughes in 1906 and they had two children.

Alice died on 3 July 1918 and Arthur died in 1954 – they are buried with their daughter in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
