Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Forrest was born about 1825 in Staffordshire, England, the daughter of William Forrest, a brickmaker, and Maria Walton.

She married Joseph Hale, a puddler in an iron works, on 22 January 1848 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire.

They had three children before they moved to Lanarkshire in Scotland about 1854. There they had a further four children and one of their sons died.

In 1876 the family boarded the Invercargill bound for Otago.

They settled in Burns St, Carisbrook, Dunedin, which is where Margaret and her daughter Alice signed the suffrage petition. Joseph found work as a gardener.

Joseph died in 1903 and Margaret died on 29 July 1905. They are both buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
