Elizabeth Coates was born about 1849 in London.
She married William Hatfield, a gentleman’s gardener, in 1870. They had 2 children, one who died in infancy.
In 1875 the family emigrated to Otago on the Gareloch and settled in North Otago.
When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition they were living in Waikouaiti.
In 1893 they adopted the daughter of Margaret Walker who had died shortly after giving birth.
William died in 1915 and Elizabeth died at her home on July 15th 1923. They are buried together in the St John’s Anglican Cemetery, Waikouaiti.
