Alice Henderson

Two of Alice's sisters also signed the petition: Christina and Stella. Another sister, Elizabeth Reid Henderson, was too young to sign the 1893 petition but in 1933 – under her married name, Elizabeth McCombs – she would become New Zealand's first woman MP.

Alice was the sister of Christina and Stella Henderson who both also signed this sheet of the Petition. She worked a missionary from 1896. Her missionary work influenced her younger sister, Christina, to take an active role in the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union of New Zealand. Christina brought 'sympathy and encouragement' to Alice's years of missionary endeavour, visiting her twice and supporting her financially. The two sisters shared a missionary union house at Sumner in Christchurch in the last years of their lives.
