Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Agnes Rutherford was born about 1856 in Australia – the daughter of William Rutherford & Mary Oliver. Her parents were born in Roxburgshire, Scotland and arrived in New Zealand via Australia about 1868.

Agnes’ father, a wagon driver, was met with a fatal accident in 1873 when, while crossing a bridge in the Manuka Gorge, his wagon fell into the stream on top him.

He left a wife and six children.

On 21 October 1875 Agnes married Edwin Hogg at her mother’s residence.

They lived, first in George St, then later in Helena St, Caversham and had a total of six children.

Edwin died in 1908 and Agnes on 30 October 1931 at Forbury Rd. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
