Ellen/Helen Hopkinson was born in New Zealand in 1860 – the daughter of Charles Hopkinson and Isabella Grant.

When Ellen signed the suffrage petition she was living in Bradshaw St, South Dunedin with her mother and her sister Caroline, working as a machinist.

Ellen died in the Tokanui Psychiatric Hospital in Te Awamutu in 1938. She is buried in the Tokanui Hospital Cemetery.
