Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Susan/Susanna Yates was born about 1835 in Leverington, Cambridgeshire, England – the daughter of William Yates, an agricultural labourer, and Esther Mott.
She married James Horne, also an agricultural labourer, in 1853 and they had 12 children, four who died in infancy or childhood, before the family emigrated to Otago in 1875 on the Wellington.
They had a further two children after their arrival, both who died young.
When Susan signed the suffrage petition the family were living in St David St, North Dunedin and James was working as a carter.
James died in 1898 and Susan died on 27 September 1921, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
Susan’s obituary said she 'was an Otago resident of over 40 years’ standing...she leaves 32 grandchildren and 53 great-grandchildren to mourn their loss”.
