Mary McKenzie was born about 1848 in Scotland – the daughter of Duncan McKenzie, a baker.
She came to New Zealand in the 1870s and married Carl Gustav/Charles Hornwall, a labourer from Sweden, on 17 May 1876 in Dunedin.
They had four children, one who died in infancy, and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Elm Row, Dunedin.
