Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Georgina Catherine Paton Howat, known as Catherine, was born on 11 July 1862 in Galston, Syr, Scotland – the daughter of John Howat, a carpenter, and Margaret Mair. (See 100 Margaret M Howat)

Catherine’s father emigrated to New Zealand in 1862 and she followed with her mother about 1866.

The family lived, at first, in the Catlins then later moved to the Tapanui district.

When Catherine signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Tapanui.

She married Thomas Mackie, a railway employee, on 20 October 1897 and they had one daughter.

The family lived in Timaru where Catherine died on 11 January 1954, Thomas died in July the same year and they are buried together in the Tapanui Cemetery.
