Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth/Bessie Finnie was born about 1858 in Scotland – the daughter of Thomas Finnie and Mary Alexander Millar.

She came to New Zealand with her parents in the early 1860s and they settled at Saddle Hill, near Dunedin.

She married William Chalmers Howden, a farmer, on 23 May 1888 in the Green Island parish.

They lived at Ngapara, in North Otago, and they had five daughters, two who died in infancy.

William died at their daughter’s home in Timaru in 1930 and Elizabeth died at another daughter's home at Saddle Hill on 28 February 1948.

They are buried in the family grave in the Duntroon Cemetery.
