Margaret Jane Irwin was born in Timaru in 1865, to parents Robert and Margaret. She married William John Hughes, a saddler, on 13 April 1892 at her parents’ home. Tragically William died in March 1899, aged 33. Five months later the couple’s only child, William Harold Hughes also died, aged 13 months. Margaret followed him just two months later, passing away in October 1899.
