Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Rhoda King was born about 1826 in Colchester, Essex, England. She married James Hurrell, a plate layer, in 1845 and they had seven children.
In 1875 Rhoda and James, with their five youngest children, emigrated to Otago on the Waimea.
They settled in Musselburgh in Dunedin where James died in 1885.
When Rhoda signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Princes St, Musselburgh.
In 1895 'a five-roomed house, owned and occupied by Mrs Rhoda Hurrell' caught fire 'the supposed cause of the fire is sparks from a fire while the owner was outside washing', the house was insured.
Rhoda died on 12 June 1907, she is buried with James in the Southern Cemetery.
