Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Barbara Campbell Mathieson was born on 11 July 1852 in Aberdeen, Scotland the daughter of William Matheson, a ship’s carpenter, and Catherine Drysdale. She lived in Aberdeen, working as a weaver as she grew older, until she met Thomas Hutcheson a blacksmith.

They married on 14 September 1872 and had two children before, in 1875, they emigrated to New Zealand on the Nelson. Unfortunately their 11-month-old daughter Williamina died on the voyage - a further 3 children were born in New Zealand.

Barbara lived in Helena Street for about 40 years until her death on 30 October 1929. Thomas had died the previous year and they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
