Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Ann Johnson was born in 1870 in New Zealand – the daughter of James William Johnston and Andrina Ross Henderson.

When Mary was 12 years old her father died and when she signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Cumberland St, Dunedin, working as a dressmaker.

After the marriage of her youngest sister Minnie, Mary Ann lived with Minnie’s family and her mother in Roslyn, Dunedin, where she died on 17 February 1938.

She is buried in the Northern Cemetery with her mother.
