Margaret Clark Leslie was born about 1843 in Kinkell, Aberdeenshire, Scotland – the daughter of Alexander Leslie, a farmer, and Isabel Cran.
She emigrated to New Zealand and married John Johnstone, a millwright, on 17 March 1874 in Dunedin.
They lived in Milton where Margaret signed the suffrage petition and had five children, three who appear to have died in childhood – they also had an adopted daughter.
John died in 1898 and Margaret died at Milton on 4 November 1921, they are buried in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
