Kate Stuart Kerr was the daughter of Angus and Margaret Kerr, who had emigrated from Glasgow to Sydney as assisted immigrants on the Victory in 1849. Kate was born c1859 in Melbourne and in 1863 she, her mother, brother John and two sisters, May and Isabella, followed her father to Invercargill on the Maria Gambrill. There her father practised as an architect, designing many of Invercargill’s earliest public buildings and other buildings throughout Southland. Kate’s father Angus, died in 1898 and her mother, Margaret Kerr in 1911. Kate continued to live in Invercargill and died in Dunedin on 3 May 1913. She is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin with her sister, Isabella Campbell Fraser, and her niece Maud Isabel Fraser. Kate’s mother, Margaret Kerr, and Kate’s two sisters, May Chisholm Erskine and Isabella Campbell Fraser, also signed the petition.
