Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Helen Margaretta Craven was born in New Zealand in 1864, the daughter of William Craven, a miner from Denmark, and Mary Ann.

Helen attended Waitahuna Gully School where she was awarded the girl’s dux prize of a silver locket and necklet in 1879.

In 1880 Helen passed the examination for pupil teacher fourth class.

On 2 March 1893, at All Saints Church, Dunedin, Helen married Joseph Henry Lee, a railway porter.

They had six children. When Helen signed the suffrage petition, the family was living in Bridge St, Caversham Rise, Dunedin.

In March 1943, an article appeared in the newspaper celebrating Helen and Joseph’s golden wedding anniversary. They were living in Lower Hutt at that time.

Joseph died in 1945, in Lower Hutt and Helen died on 3 February 954. They are both buried in the Park Island Cemetery, Napier.

Note - Helen's mother, Mary Ann, also signed the petition.
