Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Isabella Moir was born about 1839 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland.

She emigrated to Otago in 1859 on the Sevilla and she married James Lockhart, a saddler, on 3 January 1860 in Dunedin.

They had 12 children and, after two years in Dunedin, they family moved to the Tokomairiro district where James’ brothers were farming.

When Isabella signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Milton.

They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1910 where 10 of their children were present.

Isabella died at their home in Milton on 3 May 1915 – her obituary said that her death 'removes one of Tokomairiro’s earliest residents, and an estimable lady.'

James died in 1927, they are buried in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
