Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Annan was born about 1835 in Ireland. She married Andrew Craig, a fellow Irishman, in Ayrshire, Scotland on 8 December 1854. They had six children, one dying in infancy, before Andrew died in 1872.

Jane and her five remaining children boarded the Mairi Bhan in 1874 to emigrate to Otago.

In 1881 Jane married Samuel Louttit, a farm labourer, and the family moved to Palmerston, north of Dunedin. The marriage did not last and in 1893 the family was back in Dunedin, living in Melville St. During this time Jane and her daughters Martha and Margaret all signed the suffrage petition.

Jane died at her son’s house, Wickliffe Tce, Port Chalmers. Her will describes her as wife of Samuel Louttit of parts unknown.

Jane is buried in the Port Chalmers Cemetery with her son’s family.
