Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Margaret Anderson Hislop was born on 20 May 1852 in Peebleshire, Scotland – the daughter of William Hislop, a shepherd, and Margaret Anderson.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1858 on the Jura – they stayed for a short time at Caversham before moving to the Tokomairiro district before 'taking up' land at Moneymore known as 'Cringletree Farm'.
Margaret married Alexander Lowery, a farmer, on 14 March 1872 in the Milton parish. They had eight children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living at 'Spring Mount farm' at Crichton, south of Milton.
Alexander died at their home in 1919 and sometime after Margaret moved to Milton.
She died at her home on 3 March 1935, the same day as her sister Mary (See 92 Mary Murray) and is buried with Alexander in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
Her obituary said she 'was of a very retiring disposition, but although taking no active part in public affairs during her life, she was keenly interested in the welfare of the Toko Presbyterian Church, of which she was a staunch supporter.'
