Mary Ann Riley Robertson was born about 1864 in Shetland, Scotland.
She came to New Zealand and married John Matthews, a rope manufacturer, on 22 September 1882 in Dunedin.
They had two sons and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Stafford St, South Dunedin (now Fawcett St).
John died at their home in 1936 and Mary died on 14 August 1940, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
