Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Marr McAllister was born in 1880 in the Queenstown area– the daughter of William McAllister, a farmer, and Helen Marr.

At the time of Margaret’s birth her parents were farming at Halfway Bay across Lake Wakatipu from Queenstown.

They lived there until 1885 when, due to her father’s health, they moved to live in Queenstown where Margaret signed the suffrage petition.

She married Charles Septimus Monk, a musterer, on 29 June 1911 at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Queenstown and they had three children.

They lived, at first, in Cheviot before moving to Weedons where they had a farm.

Margaret died on 22 December 1959 and Charles died in 1966, they are buried together in the Weedons Cemetery.
