Sarah Isabella McCaw was born on 8 September 1871 in Tynron, Dumfriesshire, Scotland – the daughter of William McCaw, a shepherd, and Isabella Todd.

In 1880 the family emigrated to New Zealand on the Stirlingshire arriving in Wellington in September.

The family travelled to the South Island and settled on a farm at Glenore, near to Milton where Sarah signed the suffrage petition.

She married Alexander Lockhart, a farmer, on 18 January 1910 at her home at Moneymore.

They had three children and lived at Clarksville.

Sarah died in August 1952 and Alexander died the same year, they are both buried in the Milton/Fairfax Cemetery.
