Isabella Laidlaw Currie was born about 1834 in Dumfries, Scotland. She arrived in Otago about 1865.

On 29 January 1869 she married James Fenton McLaren, a tailor, their first child was born on 26 June of the same year. They had at least four more children.

Isabella’s husband James was active in local politics and was, for a year, the Mayor of Caversham Borough.

James died in 1906 and Isabella on 24 July 1914. They are buried together in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
