Ellen McCarthy was born about 1843 in Ireland.
She married Thomas McKersey, a labourer in an iron works, in London in 1862. They had four children before the family emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Allahabad – their last child was born in New Zealand.
They settled in Dunedin and when Ellen signed the suffrage petition they were living in No. 1 Road, Opoho.
Ellen died at her home on 1 December 1910 and Thomas died in 1933 – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
