Margaret Miller was born about 1840 at Comley Burn, Blackford, Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of Alexander Miller, a farmer, and Mary Whyte.
At the age of 22, on 30 November 1862, she married 36-year-old farmer James Miller.
In 1863 they emigrated to Otago on the Electric. They lived at Moa Flat, Maungatua & Clydesvale before they settled in Port Molyneux - they had 10 children.
Margaret signed the suffrage petition at their farm, 'Kinpauch', Port Molyneux.
James died at their home in 1901, after his death Margaret moved to Dunedin.
She died there on 18 July 1906 and is buried with James in the Port Molyneux Cemetery.
Her obituary said she 'bore the changing fortunes of colonial life with a cheerfulness that made her a general favourite.'
