Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Magdalene Ireland was born about 1839 in Fife, Scotland – the daughter of James Ireland, a grocer, and Janet Kay.
She emigrated to Otago and, in 1866, she married Robert Mitchell, a draper. They had six children, one stillborn and one that died in infancy. The family lived in Eskvale St, Musselburgh. Magdalene's daughter Janet Kay also signed Sheet 34 of the Petition.
Magdalene died at her home on 31 October 1918 and Robert died in 1922. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
