Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret/Maggie Johnston was born on 3 August 1855 in Stow, Edinburghshire, Scotland – the second daughter of Alexander Johnston and Margaret Hardie.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1858 on the Jura and they settled in South Otago.

Margaret married Archibald Gilchrist Morton, a farmer, on 12 September 1883 at her parent’s home in Puerua and they had four children.

When Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were farming at Puerua.

They retired to Mosgiel, near Dunedin, where Archibald died in 1936 and Margaret died on 25 July 1952, they are buried together in the East Taieri Cemetery.
