Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Helen Plummer Muir was born on 29 August 1862 in Edinburgh, Scotland – the daughter of David Duncan Muir, a printer, and Elizabeth Ferguson. (See 55 Mrs Muir)

Helen emigrated to New Zealand with her family about 1886 and settled in Dunedin.

When she signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Elm Row and Helen was working as a music teacher.

She married James Sheddan, a farmer, on 10 June 1896 at her parent’s home.

They moved to James’ farm in Toiro, South Otago and had two daughters.

James died in 1918 and after his death Helen moved back to Dunedin.

She died there on 12 May 1948 and is buried with James in the Warepa Cemetery, South Otago.
