Mary Murray was born in 1869 in New Zealand – the daughter of Robert Scott Murray, a farmer, and Mary Young. (See 106 Mary Murray senr)
The family farmed at Merton, North East Valley and Shag Valley before moving to Puerua in 1887 where Mary signed the suffrage petition.
She married Lewis Stewart, a labourer, on 14 October 1896 at Lewis’ home in Balclutha.
They had six children, one who died in infancy, and lived in the Owaka and Clutha districts.
Mary died at her home in Balclutha on 16 November 1924 and Lewis died in 1938, they are buried in the Balclutha Cemetery.
