Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Charleston Prentice was born on 24 October 1855 in Whitburn. Linlithgowshire, Scotland – the daughter of Thomas Prentice, the foreman at an oil works, and Jane Gilbert.

She emigrated to Otago in 1875 on the Christian McAusland and later that year, on 16 October, she married James Neilson/Nelson, a fishmonger.

They had nine children, three who died in infancy, and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Main Rd, South Dunedin where James ran a fish shop.

James died in 1908 and Margaret died the following year on 8 June. They are buried with four of their children in the Southern Cemetery.
