Betsy Black was born about 1843 in Forfarshire, Scotland.

She married David Nicoll, a lapper of canvas, on 22 July 1867 in Arbroath and they had four daughters.

The family emigrated to Otago in 1875 on the Nelson and settled in Dunedin where they had a further two daughters and a son.

When Betsy signed the suffrage petition the family were living in King St, Dunedin.

Betsy died at her home in George St on 12 April 1924 and David died in 1927, they are buried with their daughter Mary in the Northern Cemetery.
