Biographical information provided by Alice Meads for the He Tohu exhibition:

Agnes Muir was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1859. When she was five years old, Agnes and her family immigrated to New Zealand. The family settled in Dunedin where Agnes’ father, Hugh, worked as a baker. Agnes’ sisters, Kate Muir and Mary Aitchison, and their mother Janet, signed the same petition sheet. In 1881, on her 22nd birthday, Agnes married John Phinn at her parents’ home on George Street. John was born in Australia and worked as a linotypist. Agnes and John had six children: Jessie, Margaret, Mary, Robert, Catherine and Agnes. Agnes Phinn died on 30 May 1913, aged 54.
