Maggie Jane Pollock was born on 14 May 1870 in Stewarton, Ayrshire, Scotland. She was the daughter of Alexander Romeo Pollock, a ships steward, and Margaret Burns.

Maggie emigrated with her family, arriving in Otago on the Caroline in 1883.

She married James Hutchison in 1897 and they had a daughter the following year.

Maggie died on 9 August 1918 and is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
