Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Hay Scott Ramsay was born on 14 February 1863 in Glasgow, Scotland – the daughter of Robert Ramsay, an engine fitter, and Christina Turner. (See 58 Christina Ramsay)

The family emigrated to New Zealand soon after Mary’s birth and settled in Dunedin.

Her father died in 1889 and when she signed the suffrage petition Mary was living with her mother in Duncan St working as a dressmaker.

Her mother died in 1910 and three years later Mary embarked on 'an extended tour through Canada and Great Britain'.

While staying in Glasgow Mary became ill and died on 15 November 1913 at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
