Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Harriet Mitchell was born on 1 August 1848 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland – the daughter of William Mitchell, a turner, and Sarah Mimmett.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1860 on the Storm Cloud and they settled in Dunedin.
Harriet married John William Roberts, a grocer and carter, on 4 June 1874 at her parent’s home 'Ochil Cottage', North East Valley, Dunedin.
They had four children and when Harriet signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Main Rd, North East Valley.
John died suddenly in 1905, while giving a speech at a wedding breakfast, and Harriet died on 30 August 1925 - they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
