Margaret Lawrie was born on January 21st 1865 in Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire, Scotland – the daughter of James Lawrie and Elizabeth Johnstone.
As a young child Margaret moved with her family to live in Stockton on Tees in Durham, England.
In 1875 the family emigrated to Otago in 1875 on the Nelson and settled in Dunedin.
Margaret married John Russell, a saddler, on October 1st 1885 and they had 3 children.
When Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living in Preston Crescent, Belleknowes, Dunedin.
She died on February 5th 1898 and is buried in the Northern Cemetery.
John re-married later that year and had a further 4 children. He died in 1914 and is buried in the Southern Cemetery.
