Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Davie Snadden/Sneddon was born on 11 November 1859 in Bothkennar, Stirlingshire, Scotland – the daughter of Henry Snadden, a coal miner, and Elizabeth.

In 1883 Margaret emigrated to Otago on the Wellington accompanied by her brother Joseph – her occupation was given as machinist.

The following year, on 9 October in Dunedin, Margaret married George McKay Rutherford, a grocer.

They had four children, one who died in infancy, and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living in Lawrence St, Mornington.

George died in 1895 – he is buried with their young daughter in the Southern Cemetery.

Margaret re-married on 13 April 1898 to Wright Lowe, a retired farmer.

They lived in Lawrence, south of Dunedin, where Wright died in 1900 – he is buried in the Lawrence Cemetery.

The following year Margaret 'left on a visit to her friends in the Old Country, where she will remain for about a twelve-month before returning to the colony.'

Margaret died in Auckland on 23 July 1922 - she is buried in the Waikaraka Cemetery.
