Margaret Marshall Murray was born about 1863 at sea en route to Otago – the daughter of James Mitchell Murray, a sawyer, and Margaret Todd.
She lived with her family on the Taieri Plain near Dunedin and she married James Shaw, a farmer, in 1885.
They had two children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Woodside on the Taieri Plain.
Margaret died at her home on 12 February 1913 and James died in 1944 at Dunedin, they are buried together in the West Taieri Cemetery.
