Margaret Simpson Sinclair was born on 14 May 1843 at Dunrossness, Shetland Islands – the daughter of George Sinclair, a fisherman and crofter, and Margaret Bain.
She married James Sinclair on 12 December 1866 in Dunrossness and they had two children before they emigrated to Otago about 1870.
They settled in South Otago and had a further seven children. When Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living in Milton.
James died at their home in Milton in 1918 and Margaret died on 28 November 1925, they are buried in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
